How Are Sober Living Homes Accredited?

Accredited sober living homes provide people who have entered recovery for addiction to drugs and alcohol with a vital program. Sober living homes are residential facilities that house people who are new to sobriety. They may have just left a detoxification program. They may have completed a residential or inpatient stay just after stopping usage of drugs or alcohol.

Moving into a sober living home assists residents in the stepping-down process of treatment. They give people a chance to practice their new skills of living sober in a protective environment. Rather than go straight from a highly structured addiction treatment program back to their home and daily lives, they instead utilize a sober living home to help with the transition.

People new to needing sobriety-related housing often wonder things like how are sober living homes accredited and what do they offer?

Advantages of Staying in a Sober Living Home

Sober living homes provide myriad advantages for people who have completed an intense first level of treatment. Similar to learning to ride a bicycle, sober living homes provide the proverbial training wheels necessary to develop practice and confidence. Advantages to living in accredited sober living homes include:

A support system: Fellow residents who are also learning to manage their sobriety understand how everyone feels and how to support their roommates.

Treatment for co-occurring mental health conditions: Many sober living homes help provide support for mental health issues such as anxiety, depression, and bipolar disorder.

Structured Daily Life: Daily, weekly, and monthly structure provides expectations of responsible behavior and helps create routines.

Monitoring of Sobriety: Sober living homes keep residents honest by regularly using drug tests and breathalyzers.

Understanding the Value of Goals: Learning to set and achieve goals is an important skill for anyone in recovery. Sober living homes give residents plenty of time to learn to embrace this.

Continued Medical and Therapeutic Assistance: Sober living homes may offer in-house therapy. Others assist in procuring continued therapy and related medical appointments. They may include transportation to these appointments.

Accountability: Rules set for a sober home help keep residents accountable for how they spend their time. Peer groups living together often help keep each other honest.

Practice Returning to Home Life: Residents learn to live outside a treatment facility before returning home. This helps make the eventual transition back to family, friends, and career go more smoothly.

Sober Living Homes vs. Halfway Houses

Many years ago, the term “halfway houses” was used prevalently to describe step-down living situations for those in addiction recovery. Several problematic features of halfway houses created obstacles for many residents. Many of the houses relied on government funding in order to stay open. This made them vulnerable to a loss of funds and sudden shutdowns.

In addition, residents were often given a time limit for how long they could stay. They often were forced to leave, even if they weren’t ready. Some residents had no choice but to complete formal treatment programs before they could enter a halfway house. For those who already had those kinds of programs under their belt from previous attempts at recovery, it wasn’t a choice that matched their needs.

Sober living houses originated in California. They offer superior alternative services to a typical halfway house.

Sober Living Houses are structured in a way that avoids some of the limitations of halfway houses. They allow residents to stay until they feel ready to leave. They require residents to continue therapeutic assistance for themselves outside of the home. They also foster individual responsibility by requiring certain things like completing household chores, paying for some living expenses, and attending house meetings.

How Are Sober Living Homes Accredited?

There isn’t one answer that covers the question of how are sober living homes accredited. Currently, the federal government does not have a list of requirements for all sober living facilities. Many states adopt their own rules and regulations. California has a high number of sober living homes. Many of them developed affiliations with groups that monitor them for safety, health, and quality.

An exception to this is if a sober living home offers medical treatment, including therapy or drug testing. In order to do that, they must obtain all necessary state licenses.

Sober living homes are neither funded nor licensed by any state or local governments. The cost of staying in them is covered by the residents, often through their insurance plans. A competent sober living facility will have a structured model in place for how it works. The owners and day-to-day managers see that the model is enforced.

As more sober living homes come into being, it is likely that a standard of accreditation will be developed. This may include both state and federal laws that will govern each home. This will make it easier to answer the question of how are sober living homes accredited.

In the meantime, potential residents can help decide which home feels right for them by doing their research. Contact facilities and inquire about their policies and how they can help you or someone you love. Responsible, well-run homes will be happy to share their rules and regulations.
